Booking your first sailing charter is exciting, but if you’ve never been sailing – or perhaps have never been on a boat – it can also come with a lot of questions. What should you bring? What should you expect once you’re on board? And how do you make sure the experience is relaxing instead of stressful?

Sailing with Danger Charters is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience the glittering turquoise waters surrounding Key West. With our experienced crew, calm cruising conditions, wildlife encounters, and unforgettable views, we offer the perfect introduction for first-time sailors.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to prepare – from planning ahead and packing smart to feeling comfortable once the sails go up.

What Is a Sailing Charter?

A sailing charter is a professionally crewed sailing trip. Depending on what you’re looking for, you can join a preset excursion or reserve a private charter. On these types of sailing experiences, the captain and crew handle everything – navigation, sailing, and safety – so you can focus on relaxing in paradise.

It also helps to know what a sailing charter isn’t – especially if this is your first time:

  • You don’t need sailing experience, boating certifications, or technical knowledge.
  • You’re not expected to raise sails, steer the boat, or manage equipment.
  • If you want to learn a little along the way, the crew is happy to share.
  • Think of it as a guided experience – not a test of your sea legs!

For beginners, day sails – like those we offer – are the most popular. They offer plenty of time to enjoy the water without having to know how to charter a boat of your own or planning an overnight trip.

Day sails are ideal for couples, families, and small groups celebrating a special occasion. Whether your goal is a laid-back afternoon sail, snorkeling in clear water, or watching the sun dip below the horizon, a sailing charter is designed to meet you where you are – no experience required.

When to Book Your Sailing Charter

One of the best ways to ensure a smooth first sailing experience is to plan ahead. Key West is a popular destination year-round, and sailing charters tend to book up faster than many first-time visitors expect.

In general, it’s a good idea to book your sailing charter as soon as you know your travel dates. During peak season (typically November through March), availability can be limited weeks in advance. Even in quieter months, popular time slots and specific tours may fill quickly, particularly for groups or special occasions.

Planning ahead also gives you more flexibility. You’ll have better options when it comes to departure times, group size accommodations, and choosing between ticketed excursions or private charters. It also allows time to review policies, ask questions, and coordinate details with your group, all of which helps your day on the water feel relaxed instead of rushed.

If your schedule allows, consider booking your sailing charter earlier in your trip. That way, if weather conditions require a slight adjustment, there’s more room to reschedule and still enjoy your time on the water.

Choosing the Right Sailing Charter for Your Group

Not all sailing charters are the same, and choosing the right one can make a big difference in your overall experience. The best place to start is by thinking about who’s coming with you and what kind of day on the water you’re hoping to have.

Group size is one of the most important factors. Private charters offer more flexibility and a personalized pace, while ticketed excursions are a great option if you’re traveling as a couple or small party and want a relaxed, social atmosphere.

Next, consider the occasion and your priorities. Are you getting married in Key West, just looking to unwind, or vacationing with kids? Some guests prefer a calm, scenic sail with plenty of time to relax, while others want to include snorkeling and kayaking, or sunset views. Matching your goals to the type of charter helps set the right expectations from the start.

It’s also worth noting that bigger isn’t always better for first-time sailors. Mid-sized vessels often feel more comfortable, allow for easier movement around the boat, and create a more intimate experience.

What to Expect Before You Sail

Once you’ve booked your crewed charter, there’s typically little you need to worry about before departure – but knowing what to expect will make your day even more relaxed. Here’s what you can expect during your sail with Danger Charters.

Booking Details & Check-In

If you’re unsure which option is right, the Danger Charters team can help guide you toward a sailing experience that fits your group – and your comfort level – perfectly.

  • Charter length varies by experience
We offer a range of sailing options, from two-hour sails to longer excursions that include snorkeling, kayaking, or sunset sailing.
  • Danger Charters sails from two locations
The Danger Chandlery Store at Opal Key Resort & Marina in Old Town, and The Perry Hotel & Marina on Stock Island.
  • Check-in is 30 minutes before departure
This gives you time to park, check your gear, and meet your captain and crew.

Day of Sail

Before you board, your captain and crew will greet you, go over safety basics, and walk you through what to expect during your sail. This typically includes:

  • Where the bathrooms are located
All Danger Charters boats have marine heads onboard.
  • Life jackets and safety equipment
Life jackets are provided for all passengers, and the crew ensures everyone knows where necessities are located.
  • How your charter will flow
Duration varies depending on tour type (e.g., sunset sail vs. sail, snorkel & kayak).

What Gear & Extras Are Provided

We provide a variety of items so you don’t have to bring everything.

  • Snorkel & kayak gear
Masks, fins, snorkels, and easy-handling kayaks are included on sail, snorkel and kayak tours.
  • Shade onboard
Sails naturally provide shaded areas, and additional canopies can be added during calm summer days when needed.

Seasickness & Comfort

We intentionally seek out calm waters, and it’s unusual for guests to experience seasickness. If you are susceptible to it, though, consider sailing out of our Danger Chandlery Store location.

  • Motion sickness remedies
Remedies are available at the Danger Chandlery Store and can be helpful if you’re prone to motion sickness. Note that medication is most effective when taken about 30 minutes ahead of boarding.
  • If you feel unwell, let the crew know
They’re trained to assist and help you stay comfortable.

What to Pack for Your Sailing Charter

We provide much of what you’ll need onboard, so pack light! Space onboard is comfortable but limited, and having fewer items makes moving around the boat easier and safer.

What to Wear

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for warm weather
  • Swimsuit
  • Comfortable footwear that can get wet
  • Light jacket or long-sleeve layer for sun protection or breezy days

Personal Items

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Seasickness remedies, if needed
  • Waterproof phone case
  • Small dry bag for valuables
  • Camera or GoPro
  • Photo ID

Etiquette & Safety Tips for First-Time Guests

A few simple guidelines can help everyone feel comfortable, relaxed, and safe.

  • Listen to your captain and crew
Any guidance they give, from where to sit to when it’s safe to move around, is in the interest of safety.
  • Be prepared to remove your shoes
Going barefoot onboard is common and helps reduce the risk of slipping while protecting the deck.
  • Move carefully around the boat
Use handholds when walking, stay aware of your surroundings, and take your time when the boat is underway.
  • Keep children within sight
Except for our Sunset Sail, which is for ages 13+, all Danger Charters excursions are for all ages – families are welcome!
  • Speak up if you need help
If you feel unsure, unsteady, or have questions at any point, our crew is always happy to assist.
