About Our Boats

Danger Charters operates four historic schooners designed specifically for exploring the shallow waters, sandbars, and backcountry of Key West. Our distinctive boats are part of what makes the Danger Charters experience so memorable, offering an authentic connection to the island’s maritime heritage that larger commercial boats simply can’t replicate.

Because our schooners are traditional sailing vessels, they do not offer many of the accessibility features you might find on modern cruise ships or purpose-built accessible yachts. That said, our crew has spent more than three decades helping guests of all ages and abilities enjoy their time on the water.

Getting On Board: What Boarding Looks Like

Like most traditional sailing vessels, our schooners require guests to step from the dock onto the boat when boarding, and step back onto the dock when returning to shore. Because boats naturally move with the water, there may be a small height difference or gap between the dock and the vessel depending on tides and conditions.

Our crew is always available to provide reasonable assistance during boarding and disembarking, such as offering a steady hand for balance and stability. Many guests who are older or have mild mobility limitations find that this level of assistance is all they need to embark and disembark comfortably.

However, it is important to understand that our tours are not considered wheelchair accessible boat charters. Unfortunately, we are generally unable to bring wheelchairs aboard because we do not have a safe way to stow them during the excursion.

Once You’re On Deck

Once aboard, many guests find that the sailing portion of the experience is easier and more relaxing than they expected.

Our captains intentionally seek out the calm, protected waters of the Key West backcountry, creating a smooth and comfortable sailing experience. While conditions on the water can never be guaranteed, most guests are surprised by how peaceful these shallow waters can be.

Each of our schooners offers places to sit, relax, and take in the scenery. Depending on the season and the vessel, you can also take advantage of shade provided by sails, canopies, or covered areas on deck. Whether you’re watching dolphins, enjoying the sea breeze, or simply soaking in the views, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the experience at your own pace.

You Don’t Have to Do Everything

One of the most common misconceptions about our daytime sails is that every guest is expected to participate in every activity. That simply isn’t the case.

Snorkeling and kayaking are always optional. If you’d prefer to stay aboard and enjoy the sailing, scenery, wildlife, and fresh ocean air, you’re welcome to do exactly that. Many guests choose to spend part or all of the trip relaxing on deck rather than getting in the water.

For those who do want to participate, both activities are designed with beginners in mind. However, they do require a certain level of physical ability. Entering and exiting a kayak, climbing a ladder after snorkeling, balancing on a moving boat, and tolerating the heat and sun for several hours can be more challenging for some guests than others.

For kayaking, our tandem kayaks have a combined weight limit of 500 pounds. Our crew assists guests with loading into the kayaks, but guests should still feel comfortable getting in and out of the kayak and sitting on the water for the duration of that portion of the trip.

Pregnant guests are welcome aboard all of our trips, but depending on the stage of pregnancy and individual comfort level, activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and climbing ladders may not be feasible. We encourage guests to consider personal circumstances and consult with a physician if necessary.

Bathrooms On Board

All four Danger Charters schooners have onboard bathrooms, known in the sailing world as marine heads. 

Marine heads are designed specifically for use aboard boats, which means they are generally more compact and operate differently than a traditional household restroom. Because our vessels are traditional schooners, you can expect tighter spaces than you’d find on larger commercial boats or cruise ships.

Which Experience Might Be the Best Fit?

There is no single answer to the question of sailing accessibility. The good news is that Danger Charters offers several different ways to experience the sparkling waters of Key West.

Wind & Wine Sunset Sail

For guests looking for the most relaxed experience, our Wind & Wine Sunset Sail is often a great option. The trip lasts approximately two hours and focuses entirely on sailing, sightseeing, and enjoying one of Key West’s famous sunsets. There are no water activities, making it an appealing choice for guests who prefer to remain comfortably aboard for the duration of the trip.

Sail, Snorkel & Kayak

Our Sail, Snorkel & Kayak adventure offers more opportunities for activity. Snorkeling and kayaking are always optional, allowing guests to participate as much or as little as they like.

Sandbar, Snorkel & Sunset

If you’re looking for a laid-back day on the water, our Sandbar, Snorkel & Sunset trip can be an excellent middle ground between a sightseeing cruise and a more activity-focused adventure.

Private charters offer the greatest flexibility and can be customized around your group’s interests, preferences, and comfort level.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

A little preparation can go a long way toward ensuring a great day on the water.

• Call before you book
  If you have mobility concerns, physical limitations, are pregnant, or simply have questions about what to expect, our reservations team can help. A quick conversation can often provide the clarity you need to choose the right experience. 

• Arrive early
  We recommend arriving approximately 30 minutes before departure to allow plenty of time for check-in and boarding.

• Choose practical footwear
  Soft-soled shoes are ideal aboard a schooner. High heels and shoes with slippery soles are best left ashore.

• Bring mobility aids
  If you regularly use a walker, cane, or other mobility device, let us know in advance so we can discuss what to expect and answer any questions about boarding and storage.

• Plan ahead for motion sickness
  Our captains seek out calm, protected waters whenever possible, but if you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s worth taking precautions before your trip. If you need motion sickness medication, it’s available at the nearby Chandlery Store.
