Your Complete Summer Travel Guide From a Local

Most people think Key West is a winter thing. And sure, January, February and March have their charm, but let me let you in on something the regulars already know: there’s no bad time to visit Key West. May through August? That’s the real magic. Warm turquoise water, sea life that will blow your mind, hotel prices that make you feel like you won the lottery, and a town that feels alive without being overwhelming. Pack your sunscreen, flip flops, bathing suit and come explore Key West with an open heart.
I promise you, summer in Key West will win you over in the best way.
The Sweet Spot Before the Heat Peaks
Summer here is genuinely one of my favorite times of year. May through August sit in this wonderful window where the temperatures are warm and inviting, mid-to-upper 80s, with the ocean breeze keeping everything fresh and cool. The water is perfection for swimming. The sunsets are glorious. While there may be a bit of humidity, the island is surrounded by water, and the constant ocean breeze keeps everything cool and comfortable.
This is the Key West that postcards try to capture and never quite get right. You just have to experience it for yourself. The moment you step off the plane and feel that warm salt air on your face? You’ll understand exactly what I mean.
Before Hurricane Season Gets Serious

I know what you’re thinking, hurricane season starts June 1st. And yes, technically that’s true. But here’s the thing nobody talks about: the really active part of hurricane season doesn’t typically ramp up until September. Early summer travel puts you well ahead of all of that.
What you do get? Those absolutely stunning cloud-painted summer skies and dramatic sunsets without a worry in the world. Just keep an eye on the forecast like any smart traveler would, and come enjoy Key West when she’s at her most beautiful.
Your Wallet Will Actually Thank You
Okay, as a bed and breakfast manager for many years, one of the most important things I always wanted travelers to know is this…
Winter in Key West, January through April… is absolutely gorgeous, but it is also our busiest and most expensive season.
Summer, however, is a completely different story. We’re talking 30–50% off the same beautiful guesthouses, boutique inns, and waterfront properties you’ve been dreaming about.
Key West is known for its colorful, gingerbread-trimmed bed and breakfasts, tucked into tropical gardens with inviting pools and shady porches. It’s the kind of place where you slow down without even trying.

And then there’s the food scene… which surprises so many people. We have wonderful restaurants here, many owned by chefs who decided to “retire” on a little island and open a restaurant instead. How lucky are we that they did? Because the food culture in Key West is expansive, eclectic, and full of cozy little spots where you’ll find yourself saying, that may be one of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time.
Even activities, especially on the water, often have special summer pricing. So with so many hotels, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, restaurants, and water adventures to choose from, the smart thing to do is simple:
Book early, spend less, and do more.
Summer really is the season of the smart traveler.
The Ocean is Absolutely Vibrant
I could talk about the underwater world here all day long. In the summer, the water temperature hovers around 85°F, and the sea life is just… wow. It truly feels like you’re swimming inside a living painting.
Parrotfish weave through the coral reefs, sea turtles glide right past you like they have all the time in the world, and schools of shimmering fish move together, turning all at once like a perfectly choreographed dance. Starfish slowly make their way across the soft sea grass and of course… dolphins! Yes!! Our waters are filled with dolphins. There’s even an area where they love to play, and you can visit by boat.
The visibility in the summer is often extraordinary, clear, calm, and full of life.

Do yourself a favor and get in the water. You won’t regret a single second of it. Head to the beach or hop on a sailboat out to the Key West Nature Preserve, where the waters are calm, peaceful, and absolutely teeming with sea life.
And there’s something else about the beaches in Key West that is hard to explain unless you’ve felt it yourself… the salt water is incredibly healing.
People come to Key West tired, stressed, burned out, heartbroken, overworked, and then they get in that water. They float. They snorkel. They sit on a sandbar and talk and laugh and forget what day it is. And something changes. The ocean has a way of calming the nervous system like nothing else. The salt water, the sun, the fresh air, it’s like nature’s reset button.
Salt water is good for your skin, good for circulation, good for sore muscles, but I think it’s especially good for the soul. You sleep better here. You breathe deeper here. You slow down here.
So when you come, don’t just look at the water.
Get in.
Float.
Let the ocean do what it does best.
Beat the Heat — Favorite Cool-Down Spots

Here’s the thing about a hot Key West afternoon, you just need to know where to go. And I’ve got you covered.
Of course, a stop at Flamingo Crossing Ice Cream shop on Duval Street for a scoop of homemade ice cream definitely helps with the heat too!
But I digress.
Here are a few great things to do to cool off and keep the breeze breezin.
🦋 Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory
This is truly one of the sweetest places to visit and, honestly, one of the most underrated spots on the island. You walk through the doors into this beautiful, soaring glass-enclosed habitat, soft angelic music playing, and suddenly you’re surrounded by hundreds of butterflies from all over the world just floating all around you.

It’s peaceful and magical in a way that’s honestly hard to put into words. It makes everyone slow down. You just kind of wander through quietly and take it all in.
Iridescent blues, painted ladies, giant swallowtails… landing on flowers, landing on people’s shoulders… just living their best lives.
Go first thing in the morning for the best light and the most butterfly activity. And bring your camera, you are going to want every single photo.
🦈 Key West Aquarium

This little gem has been delighting visitors since 1935 and it absolutely earns that legacy. Sitting right on the waterfront at Mallory Square, it’s cool, it’s fascinating, and the guided tours are genuinely entertaining. Sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, a touch tank where you can hold horseshoe crabs, it’s wonderful for all ages. After your visit, wander over to the Customs House, such a beautiful stretch of boutiques, galleries and local treasures and treat yourself to a velvety café con leche from Cuban Coffee Queen. My suggestion is only have one though, it could power an airplane.

🚃 Old Town Trolley Tours
If you’re visiting Key West for the first time, please do this on day one. Trust me on this.
The Old Town Trolley winds you through the most beautiful historic streets, past Victorian homes draped in bougainvillea, by the Hemingway House, the Southernmost Point, and all the little corners of Old Town that make this island so special.
And along the way, your guide tells the best stories, pirates, rum runners, wacky local residents, drag queens storming City Hall, and literary legends, the kind of stories that make this island feel like one of the most fascinating places on earth.

Because it is.
You can hop on and hop off all day at multiple stops, explore, have lunch, wander, then hop back on again. And in the summer, with that warm breeze blowing through the open-air trolley, it feels absolutely perfect.

🥭 Thursday Farmers Market at Truman Annex
Every Thursday from 1–6pm, a locals favorite happens at Truman Annex, right along the ocean’s edge near Fort Zachary Taylor Beach. The Waterfront Market sets up and it is a full-on sensory experience.
Picture tables overflowing with freshly cut tropical fruit, juicy mango, sweet pineapple, cool cantaloupe, all of it impossibly refreshing on a warm afternoon. This is the kind of market where you can load up everything you need for an incredible picnic, or stock your hotel room or Airbnb so well that cooking becomes completely optional.

Wander and you’ll find handmade hot sauces with serious personality, gorgeous cheese selections, fresh-baked breads still warm from the oven, authentic Indian dishes, homemade pastas with their own house-made sauces, and more flavors than you can get through in one afternoon. Dip lovers, you are going to be so happy here, creamy hummus, smoky fish dip, vibrant salsas, and just about every scoop-able delight you can imagine.
The best part?
Most vendors love sharing samples, so wander freely and taste your way through the whole thing. And for those keeping it light and clean, there’s no shortage of healthy organic options… chia puddings, flourless breads, fresh green juices that taste like fresh goodness in a glass.
Summer is when this market really shines. Mangos at absolute peak ripeness, Key limes by the bag, tropical seasonings that make a perfect gift or an incredible addition to your grill during your stay. There’s always beautiful local artwork if you want to take a little piece of Key West home on your wall, and handcrafted jewelry that catches the light like only island-made things do.
🚲 Exploring by Bicycle with Key Lime Bikes
Key West was absolutely made for beach cruiser bicycles, and the moment you get on one, you’ll completely understand why. Wide seats, easy pedaling, a basket for your beach towel, water bottle and all your important daily goodies. It’s just the happiest way to move through this island.
The island is four miles long, totally flat, and full of beautiful bike-friendly paths that make it almost impossible to get lost. One of my favorite rides takes you right along Smathers Beach, where you’ll pedal alongside locals who never seem to tire of this view and neither will you. The sun hits the crystal-clear water and it genuinely looks like diamonds sparkling out there. It’s breathtaking every single time.

ink, orange, gold and purple that keep getting more dramatic as the sun drops below the horizon. It’s one of those moments that stops you completely in your tracks and reminds you exactly why you came here.
Bike riding really is the best way to see Key West. You slow down, you notice things, you stumble onto little spots you’d never find from a car. And zero parking stress, you can always find a spot to lock your bike up.
One thing, bring water and actually drink it! The Key West sun is glorious but it means business. Stay hydrated and you’ll have the most wonderful day.
One of my personal favorites for bike rentals is Key Lime Bikes at 122 Ann Street. They take great care of their bikes, their service is wonderful, and they genuinely love helping you figure out the best routes for your ride. You can simply rent a cruiser by the hour, day, or week… or join one of their guided tours, which end with a complimentary slice of award-winning Key Lime Pie. Yes, really.

🌴 Mac’s Place — Favorite Tiki Spot on the Water
When that afternoon sun is at its peak and you’re looking for a shady, breezy place to land, Mac’s Place is exactly where I send people.
Tucked right along the marina, it stays beautifully cool under its legendary tiki hut, with the most wonderful ocean breeze doing all the work for you. You can sit back, relax, and just let the island take over from there.

Fresh seafood tacos, handcrafted margaritas that hit just right, daily live music, and happy hour from 3–6pm. It’s also dog-friendly, they even have treats for your pup, which somehow makes me love them!
And if you’re out on the water, you can even pull up by boat since they have dock space right out front.
It’s one of those places that just feels like Key West. Easy, breezy, on the water, good music, good food, and no one in a hurry.
Oh, and if your team is playing, you’re covered, plenty of TVs, cold drinks, and that ocean breeze still blowing.

🌮 Garbo’s Grill at Hank’s — You’ve Probably Seen This on TV

If you watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, you already know the name. Garbo’s is Key West’s most beloved food truck, a charming Airstream tucked right in the garden at Hank’s Hair of the Dog Saloon on 409 Caroline Street…and one bite explains everything. Korean BBQ tacos, fresh Mahi tacos, lobster rolls, the famous Umami Burger, bacon-wrapped mango dogs that sound impossible and taste like a miracle. Grab your food, get a cold drink from Hank’s full bar, settle in with live music playing over your head, and let Key West do the rest. Open daily from 11am to midnight …it never disappoints.
⭐ The Adventures You’ll Never Stop Talking About
I always say there are things you do on vacation, and then there are things that actually change you. These next two? Firmly in the second category. If you’re coming to Key West this summer, please don’t skip them.
⛵ Danger Charters — My Favorite Way to Experience the Water
I truly cannot say enough good things about Danger Charters. While I officially started working with them in July 2025, long before that, for nearly 20 years…I was sending our hotel guests out with them when I managed a bed and breakfast. And without fail, guests always came back glowing. Every single time.
This company really captures the soul of Key West on the water. Beautiful 65-foot schooners, small and intimate groups of just 20–25 guests, crews who genuinely love what they do, and onboard bathrooms. People step off the boat happy, relaxed, a little sun-kissed, and filled with the kind of joy that only comes from a day on the water with great people.
One thing I always tell visitors is this: not all boat trips in Key West are the same. And that’s exactly why I love Danger so much. It never feels crowded or commercial. It feels personal, relaxed, and beautiful day on the water.

All of the trips sail out to the Key West Nature Preserve, where the water is calm and clear and full of sea life — sea turtles, starfish, tropical fish — and you can snorkel, kayak through the mangroves, or simply float and take in the quiet beauty of the backcountry.
From May 1 through September 30, we’re especially excited about our Sandbar, Snorkel & Sunset Sail — think chill vibes, chilled wine and beer, floaty mats, maybe a Nerf football, turquoise water, and nowhere you need to be except right where you are.
The Half-Day Charters include sailing, snorkeling, and guided kayak tours, along with light snacks and drinks, wine, beer, sodas, and water. If you have the time, the Full-Day Premium Charter is the ultimate experience, with extra time on the water, snorkeling, guided kayak tours and a full lunch served while you sail.
If you’re looking for something more private, all of the trips are available as private charters. And for smaller groups, the “Seas the Day” Private Powerboat Charter is perfect for couples, families, or a group of friends who want to create their own perfect day…choose dolphin watching, snorkeling…sandbar… whatever combination you wish.
And then there’s the 2-hour Wind & Wine Sunset Cruises, which is one of the most beautiful ways you can spend in an evening in Key West. A small group, a historic schooner sailboat, a guided tasting of eight different fine wines (including champagne), delicious appetizers served by the crew, and a sunset you will never forget.
It’s one of those experiences people talk about long after their trip is over.
🪂 Skydive Key West — Just Do It
Okay. I know this one might make some of you nervous. But please, hear me out.
Skydive Key West offers tandem jumps (you and instructor jump together)… above what I genuinely believe is one of the most beautiful views on the entire planet. The whole chain of the Florida Keys stretching out below you like an emerald necklace laid across the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen. Both the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico visible at the same time. And in summer the skies are this deep, vivid blue with visibility that goes on forever.

Friends of mine have jumped for their 60th birthday, others have asked for a hand in marriage while in the air, but what I hear most is how incredible the Sky Dive Key West team is, how safe they felt and how it was literally…the most thrilling thing they have ever done.
Whether it’s your first jump or you’ve done it a hundred times, doing it over Key West in summer is something else entirely. And YES! Buy the video…so you can show all your friends! Tag them when you go, they deserve every single share. @SkyDiveKeyWest
Paradise is Waiting — What Are You Waiting For?
Key West in summer is a gift wrapped in sunshine, saltwater, and the kind of endless possibility that’s hard to find anywhere else. The hotel deals are real, the sea life is spectacular, the adventures are waiting, and the sunsets? The sunsets will ruin you for all other sunsets… in the absolute best possible way.
Pack light. Book early. Bring your sense of adventure and an open heart. The Conch Republic welcomes you, warmly, wildly, and wonderfully.
See you in Key West!
